Book Review | Deep Singh Shaheed: The Man in the Legend

For anyone interested in Sikh history, this is one of the most important modern biographies of Baba Deep Singh available, one of the most revered figures in Sikh history. Rather than retelling a familiar life story, the author Harisimran Singh attempts something more ambitious: separating historical fact from folklore.

The book begins as a typical biography showing us Baba Deep Singh's life from his early years in Pahuwind near Amritsar, his mentorship with Guru Gobind Singh, his significant contributions to the Guru Granth Sahib, his military service under Banda Singh Bahadur and then leading the Shaheed Misl. The rest of the book explores his legendary final stand in 1757 near Amritsar following the desecration of the Harmandir Sahib by the Afghan army led by Ahmad Shah Durrani.
